THE CAMPAIGN TO SAVE THE BRANDYWINE BATTLEFIELD
The Battle of Brandywine was an important engagement in America's Revolutionary War. Major military personages of the time were all involved on that fateful day of September 11th, 1777 including General George Washington and General Lafayette for the Continental Army and Generals Howe and Cornwallis for the British forces. Although the American main army, numbering roughly 16,000 men, were forced to retreat, they were not demoralized, having fought well against a seasoned professional army of 13,000 British and 6,800 Hessian troops commanded by Hessian Lt. Gen. Wilhelm von Knyphausen. This feeling, cultivated among the people of the rolling countryside along the Brandywine River, would encourage the young Continental Army on future fields of battle in their quest for Independence.
The Brandywine Battlefield historic site is in danger of closing due to a lack of public funding for operations. To assist in preserving this treasured and historically significant property for the benefit and enjoyment of visitors to the Brandywine Valley, many Bed & Breakfasts of the Brandywine Valley have created "Reservations for Preservation." For every reservation received by the participating Bed & Breakfast during 2009, $1 will be donated to the Brandywine Battlefield. Matching donations will come from Delaware County's Brandywine Conference & Visitor Bureau, and guests making reservations will be offered the opportunity to make a donation.
